LONDON – European indexes started the trading week on a stronger footing, with traders looking ahead to more corporate earnings, economic data and a Bank of England rate decision this week. The U.K.'s FTSE 100 will be closed Monday for a public holiday after the coronation of King Charles III. Market players have spent weeks juggling concerns over inflation and interest rates, with the Bank of England due for a rate-setting meeting on Thursday. Both the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank hiked rates by a quarter of a percentage point last week, with many now expecting the former to start cutting rates at some point during the summer. Minutes from Japan's March monetary policy meeting showed board members were concerned over inflation accelerating at a higher-than-expected pace.

Ireland's finance minister spoke of the new optimism and constructiveness surrounding talks between the U.K. and the EU following months of bitter post-Brexit trade disputes. This part of the Brexit deal mandates checks on some goods that travel to Northern Ireland from the rest of the U.K. — with the new negotiations aimed at easing these rules. Unionist parties in Northern Ireland have argued that the checks place an effective border in the Irish Sea.
DAVOS, Switzerland — Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez told CNBC Monday that the European Union has something to learn from Washington and its new policies to fight inflation, saying he hopes that a trade war between the two sides can be avoided. "We need to learn," Sanchez told CNBC when asked the Inflation Reduction Act which the U.S. hopes will make it the go-to place for green investment. "We need to reform some internal aspects of our industrial policies such as state aid, reducing bureaucracy and trying to send a message for the industry worldwide that's it's Europe, and of course Spain, that is a good place to locate," he added. The sweeping U.S. legislation, which was approved by U.S. lawmakers in August and includes a record $369 billion in spending on climate and energy policies, has received a mixed response from the 27 EU nations. The European Commission, the executive arm of the EU, has previously said there are "serious concerns" about the design of the financial incentives in the package.

The tax cuts came as the Bank of England was looking to start selling bonds into the market, unwinding years of quantitative easing. The International Monetary Fund urged lawmakers and central bank policymakers to work in lockstep with each other to mitigate the effects of the slowing economic environment. Speaking more generally, however, he said it's very important that fiscal policy doesn't go in the opposite direction of monetary policy. So that was directly contradicting the objective of monetary policy," he said. His central message was that fiscal policy is hugely important but that it should be done in a way consistent with what central banks are trying to accomplish.
